Deli Worker Faced Criminal Charges for Allegedly Eating $9,200 Worth of Deli Meat

Have you ever “borrowed” something from work and just not given it back? Maybe it was a favorite pen, a mug that you eventually “adopted”, or you used the photocopier for personal use once or twice. Well, in 2018 managers found out that this deli worker helped herself to over $9200 worth of sliced ham throughout her eight years working there. (1)

Deli Worker Eats Thousands Of Dollars Worth Of Ham On The Job

Of course, every once in a while, we all take our liberties at work. Small things, like maybe leaving five minutes early or accidentally bringing home a spoon from the office kitchen and just never bringing it back. These are small things that really don’t add up to much – unlike this Ohio grocery store deli work. In the eight years that she worked the deli counter, she reportedly snacked on three to five pieces of ham (or occasionally salami) each shift. Finally, in 2018, one of the store managers figured it out.

How The Store Found Out

No names were given, however, the store’s loss prevention manager received a tip from someone about this deli worker’s snacking habits. They reported it to the county’s sheriff’s office, who brought the employee in for some questioning. Here, she admitted to the crime.

According to the store, her actions add up to about 260 pounds of ham over the span of her employment there. They valued this at $9,200. Some have pointed out that amount means that it was some pretty expensive ham – more than $35 per pound. (2)

The Consequences

Naturally, the store fired the employee. I suppose systematic larceny every single shift is a fire-able offense. While they did take the matter to the sheriff’s office, no charges or felonies were laid. It is not clear whether or not she had to pay back the amount that the ham was worth or not.

“While our office did take a report of the issue as requested by the store, no determination of charges has been made,” said the sheriff’s office. “The procedure is to send the report to the Prosecutor’s Office and they are the ones to decide.”

One thing is for sure, this woman will likely have trouble getting another deli counter job ever again. It is certainly a reminder to all of us that the little things do add up – and they don’t go unnoticed.

If you think, nearly 10 thousand dollars in stolen ham is odd. Check out this top 10 list of weird things that have been stoteln.
