How to Make A Mosquito Trap In Under 10 Minutes

As we inch closer and closer to the summer, you are probably anticipating spending plenty of time in your backyard and outdoors. One thing you’re probably not excited about? Mosquitoes. Thankfully, there is a cheap, easy way to keep your back deck free of the annoying, biting little creatures: Your very own DIY mosquito trap. (1)

How to Make a Mosquito Trap

This can be for your back porch, front porch, balcony, or anywhere you are trying to keep mosquito-free! These DIY mosquito traps are inexpensive and easy to make. What’s better, they don’t require any toxic chemicals or sprays. All you need is a box fan, a mesh food cover, and binder clips. (1)

Putting Together Your Mosquito Trap

The first thing you need is your box fan. You can buy them on Amazon or find them at your local hardware store for less than $40. The force for the wind that the fan generates will be what catches the mosquitoes flying by and blows them into the trap. (1)

Next, you need your mesh food cover. These usually aren’t more than $20. The next can be easily clipped onto the fan and is what catches the bugs. Stuck in the net and unable to fly against the current produced by the fan, the mosquitoes quickly die. (1)

Finally, you need four or so binder clips to attach the net to the fan. These should only cost a few dollars. Make sure you secure your net to the side of the fan where the wind is blown out of. This will ensure that the mosquitoes are blown into the net, not away from it. (1)

You’ll likely want to empty the mosquito net at least once a day, depending on how many mosquitoes you have in our area. (1)

Skeeterbag

Skeeterbag is a company that specializes in netting specifically for mosquito-catching fan traps. Each net costs $25, however, you will still have to purchase your own fan. If you’re curious about whether or not one trap will be enough, Skeeterbag makes these recommendations (2):

  • Single-family home no pets: One trap, unless you have a severe mosquito problem
  • Home with 1 to 4 outdoor or indoor pets: One to three traps
  • Ranchettes with livestock and pets: One trap per stall or pin, traps for feeding areas, and one to three traps for the house.

Don’t wait until after you’ve already been eaten alive by mosquitoes. Get your traps set up now so that you can finally enjoy a mosquito-free summer.
