“Hey everyone. Justin here. I wanted to update you guys on what’s been going on,” he said in the video. “Obviously, as you can probably see from my face, I have this syndrome called Ramsay Hunt syndrome and it is from this virus that attacks the nerve in my ear and my facial nerves and has caused my face to have paralysis.”

He continued to say: “So for those who are frustrated by my cancelations of the next shows, I’m just physically, obviously, not capable of doing them. This is pretty serious, as you can see. I wish this wasn’t the case, but my body is telling me I gotta slow down.”

“As you can see, this eye is not blinking,” he said while winking his eyes and attempting to smile. “I can’t smile with this side of my face, this nostril will not move, so there is full paralysis in this side of my face.”

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome

Ramsay Hunt syndrome (herpes zoster oticus) is a rare disease. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After having chicken pox, the virus does not go away, and lays dormant in the nervous system where it might reactivate later in life as shingles. A shingles outbreak that affects your facial nerves specifically is what can cause Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. This may cause facial paralysis, and deafness, amongst other symptoms. Swift treatment of Ramsay Hunt syndrome can decrease the risk of complications.
