Ship Carrying 4,000 Luxury Cars Sinks Two Weeks After Catching Fire

A ship that had a cargo of a thousand luxury cars sunk off the Azores archipelago recently. While no one can be blamed except for the tides, we wouldn’t want to be the owners of said cars. The transporter, named Felicity Ace, was moving around 4,000 cars. And let’s reiterate- these were swanky cars. Not your average Chevy Spark or Dodge Caravan, but Porsches and Bentleys.

The vessel was on its merry way to Rhode Island from Emden in Germany when it caught fire. Thankfully, none of the crew members were harmed during the evacuation after the fire fully broke on February 16.[1]

Felicity Ace Ship- Or The New Titanic?

While the captain of the cargo ship, Joao Mendes Cabecas, assured Reuters of no oil leak as of now, he couldn’t assure anything for the future. Currently, with the fuel tanks damaged in the sunken vessel, an oil leak could take place. The vessel currently lies at the bottom of the Atlantic at 3,500 meters.

The Portuguese navy guaranteed that no one was hurt by the fire. In fact, all of the 22 crew members were then taken to a hotel. On the other hand, it did take the navy, the Air Force, and four merchant ships some time to complete the evacuation.

According to Reuters, the damage to the vehicles was covered by insurance. As stated by Volkswagen, the insurance cost would be around $155 million. Bentley, one of the car companies to get enmeshed in this debacle, stated that 189 of their cars were on the ship. Porsche also confirmed that the vessel was carrying 1,100 of its models onboard. One of the customers put out a tweet to state that their car was on the abandoned ship. Yet another customer tweeted that their car had been reordered.

Twitter reporter Zerin Dube stated, “Logging into the Porsche TYD app now indicates that all vehicles that were on Felicity Ace ship have been reordered. Confirmed on forums that customers are seeing new orders with new commission numbers in TYD. Existing customer future build dates don’t seem to have shifted.”
