Did a 3M tape factory accidentally create an invisible wall?

However, in one alleged scenario, their use resulted in an event that seemed more at home in a science fiction novel than on a factory floor. The event in question took place in the summer of 1980 at a 3M tape factory, as described by a 3M engineer in the 1997 Conference Proceedings of the Society of Plastics Engineers.1,2

Reports about the event circulated, speaking of bewildered workers who felt an “invisible barrier” they couldn’t pass through, located right next to the tape-making machine. It seemed as though an invisible wall, reminiscent of some advanced force field from a sci-fi thriller, had spontaneously appeared.2 However, the wall was not truly a wall in the conventional sense. It was (hypothetically) an impressive demonstration of the unexpected ways in which physics can show up in our everyday lives.

An Unseen Power

Plastic has a strange relationship with electricity. While the 3M tape factory machines can busily churn out reams of adhesive tape, they can also create large amounts of static electricity. This is a common phenomenon in many plastic production processes, but at the 3M facility, it may have taken a dramatic twist.3

In the heart of the factory, a substantial electric field, potent enough to exert a physical force on nearby objects, is said to have been created.4 This effect is known as an “electric wind” or “ionic wind”, and is a well-documented event. Ionic wind happens when a high voltage is applied to a sharp point, creating a stream of ions strong enough to blow out a candle or even power a lightweight vehicle.5

However, what may have happened at the 3M tape factory was not just an ordinary demonstration of ionic wind. This event is described as an extraordinary spectacle, where the tape production machines unintentionally created an invisible electrostatic wall.

The wall would reappear time after time, each instance of the machines ramping up production, giving rise to the strange event. It served as a shocking reminder (literally and figuratively) of the vast amount of knowledge we have yet to acquire about the physical world around us.

The Scientific Implications: An Invisible Frontier

The events at the 3M tape factory provide more than an intriguing tale. They present a window into the fascinating realm of electrostatics, a branch of physics with deep implications for our understanding of the physical world.

Although electrostatic phenomena are often relegated to science classrooms, they are not confined to laboratory experiments or theoretical studies. The incident at the 3M tape factory illustrates that electrostatic forces can manifest in large-scale, tangible ways in everyday settings.

The manifestation of an invisible wall in a factory environment also poses intriguing questions about the untapped potential of electrostatic forces. If an industrial machine can create a substantial electrostatic field by accident, could we also harness these forces? Could we create walls and fields for specific purposes, such as advanced manufacturing processes or novel security measures, just using electricity? While such applications may be purely speculative at this point, they underscore the potential of electrostatic phenomena as a field to explore.
