Even with all the love and compassion in the world, sometimes natural instincts are best respected and feared. In Russia, a 41-year-old man lost his life due to a bear attack. However, he was not out in the wild. There were extenuating circumstances behind the fatal attack. They were so polarizing that social media users could only see the event as a lesson for others with similar wishes. The shocking incident took place in 2018, almost six years ago.
41-year-old Sergey Grigoriyev, an experienced hunter, had picked up a brown bear. He had stumbled across it while it was still a young cub. However, in a tragic turn of events, 4 years after their initial meeting, Sergey’s skeletal remains were all that could be discovered. His family would lodge a missing report about him, making the Police investigate the property. There, the police discovered his decomposed remains.

The Aftermath of the Bear Attack
The hunter had been absent from the public eye for quite a while when his neighbors started worrying about his safety. One of them recalled that they had called him, but there was no answer. Moreover, when Sergey’s relatives arrived, they came across a loose bear roaming the area. The relatives had a dog in their company. Fortunately, the dog had jumped at the bear, which allowed the relatives to flee from another bear attack via their car.
There were more reports received by the Police about Sergey’s property situated in the Chelyabinsk region’s Ozersk. They had notified the authorities that the bear, which was supposed to be confined, had broken out from its usual cage. The authorities, upon assessing the gravity of the situation, took the best course of action available to them. To prevent anyone else in the locality from suffering another bear attack, they shot the brown bear dead. Further examination of the corpse and the area confirmed that one of the dogs living on Sergey’s property was also killed and eaten by the bear.

An official statement from the police described, “Officers used their service weapons to kill the dangerous animals. As a result of the measures taken, the bear does not pose a threat to citizens’ lives and health any longer.” Alexey Petrov, a senior detective, shed further light on the exact findings: “The cage was open. The animal was walking around behaving aggressively. One the plot we found the skeletal remains of a man.”
Concerns Regarding The Bear’s Upbringing
Even though Sergey had “adopted” the bear, the exact living conditions of the animal remain unclear. Grigoriyev had named the animal Vorchun, or in English, Grumble. He had adopted Vorchun alongside one more cub. However, Sergey had given that one to a ‘baiting station’. This is a brutal area where hunting dogs receive their training in the presence of live predators. Needless to say, their reputation for looking after animals is extremely poor, to say the least.
As such, users on social media raised a lot of questions as to the conditions that led to the bear attack. One user on Instagram wrote: “People who wanna be personal with wild animals need education.” Another wrote: “A wild animal will do what wild animals do.” A third explained: “Wild animals is always a wild animal, domestication isn’t immediate, it happens in generations.” Another reiterated the sentiment: “Lesson for animal lovers (only fanatic ones)- Love animals but respect their space and nature as the wild. Don’t humanize them or cuddle.”
The concern was not only limited to users on the internet, as Grigoriyev’s friends also had similar worries. Reportedly, they had seen the brown bear attack him on a few occasions previously. As such, they were not entirely convinced about the decision when Sergey kept it and tried raising the wild creature. However, none of his friends or relatives could convince him to let the animal go back into the wild. It is a sad demise, no matter the intention.
