It’s not odd for a police officer to encounter a distressed dog, but this particular instance carried a unique twist. Officer Kevin Zieschang was summoned in response to a report of a juvenile deer found in a backyard. He was tethered to a tree. What set this situation apart was that the residence in question was unoccupied, as it was still being constructed.
The construction team, along with the officer, successfully freed the deer. However, what caught the officer’s attention was that this wasn’t your typical buck. While it was expected that the buck would dash away once released, it defied that assumption. Remarkably, the deer appeared to feel grateful towards the police officer and the workers. Prompting it to seek a means of voicing its appreciation.
The workers took a moment to scratch his ears affectionately
In the video, their voices captured them musing. “He’s just sticking around, man!” The origins of how the buck ended up tethered to the tree remained a mystery. But it had grown so comfortable around humans that it displayed a desire to stay in their company. Fondly dubbed “Uncle Buck” by the men, the deer boldly approached people, nuzzling against them.
Astonishingly, it even engaged in the kind of affectionate behavior that domesticated animals normally exhibit, such as licking their hands. On the following day, the local news team arrived to cover the deer’s story, and Uncle Buck remained his accustomed, at-ease self around the crew. He even entertained them with a display of his behavior.

As Officer Zieschang engaged in an interview with the television team, the commentator remarked, “Officer Zieschang is currently here with the news team, discussing the incident involving the deer’s entanglement yesterday. And wouldn’t you know it, during the course of this news briefing, the deer made a reappearance.”
The police acted fast, ensuring the deer was relocated safely
While the police weren’t convinced that the deer could be considered a domesticated pet, they stressed the importance of refraining from shooting him in case he walked into someone’s yard. They speculated that the deer might attempt to return to the still-under-construction residence. Taking this into account, they reached out to Lone Star Animal Control and the Texas Game Warden to assume responsibility for the deer’s welfare.
After sedating the deer, the authorities securely relocated him to a sanctuary. A post on the police department’s official Facebook page conveyed, “We’re pleased to report that he’s now living safely and protected in his new habitat.”
Viewers had a lot to say about the rescue, with one saying, “That guy is now a Disney princess now, whether he wanted to be one or not.” Another said, “Wow. I’ve had a deer come close to me when I was on vacation but not this close.” What a truly heartwarming story!
