‘Demon’ Canines: Dog Groomer Gives Advice on Which Dog Breeds to Avoid

When it comes to choosing a dog breed, there’s a plethora of options available, each with its own unique traits and characteristics. As a professional dog groomer, The Canoodler (@the.canoodler8) on TikTok has had the chance to interact with numerous breeds and speak up about her interactions with them. She says while most dogs are delightful companions, a few breeds can be particularly challenging. The Canoodler’s 4-part series speaks about which breeds are the ones to steer clear from, and it has wracked up over 4 million views. Here’s her list of the ‘demon’ breeds you might want to think twice about bringing into your home:

1. Pomeranians – The Fluffy Demon Dog Breed

While Pomeranians might look like cute balls of fluff, they can have a devilish side. These pups are known to be prone to post-grooming alopecia, a condition that can affect their coat after grooming. Beyond that, their temperament can sometimes be likened to that of a small Chow Chow – a bit feisty and demanding.1

2. Bulldogs – The Stinky Situation

Bulldogs have a distinct appearance that many find charming, but there’s more to them than meets the eye. Some Bulldog owners don’t prioritize proper cleaning and hygiene, leading to unpleasant odors and potential health issues. If you’re considering a Bulldog, be prepared for regular grooming and care.2

3. French Bulldogs – Cute Dog Breed but Complex

French Bulldogs have gained immense popularity in recent years, but their charm comes with a few caveats. Due to their breeding history, Frenchies can suffer from various health problems that might require extra attention and care. So, while they might be adorable, be aware of their potential health challenges.

4. Maltese – Beware the ‘Rat’ Reputation

Maltese dogs are known for their luxurious white coats and elegant appearance. However, they can be a handful when it comes to grooming. Their long hair can lead to pesky splinters that might not make them the ideal choice for everyone. If you’re not up for the grooming commitment, you might want to think twice about a Maltese.

5. Bernese Mountain Dogs – Stubborn Yet Loveable Breed

Bernese Mountain Dogs are often admired for their striking appearance and loving nature. However, their stubborn streak can sometimes pose challenges for owners, especially regarding training and obedience. If you’re prepared to put in the time and effort to work with their strong personality, a Bernese Mountain Dog could still make a wonderful companion.

6. Chihuahuas – The Ever-Evolving Reputation

Chihuahuas have a reputation that varies widely depending on who you ask. While some might consider them to be ‘demon’ breeds due to their often assertive behavior, others find them loyal and affectionate companions. It’s essential to understand that each Chihuahua is unique, and their behavior is influenced by various factors, including socialization and training.

7. Labradors – A Mixed Dog Breed

Labradors are incredibly popular family dogs known for their friendly nature and loyalty. However, even within this breed, there can be variations in behavior. Brown Labradors might exhibit more excitement, while white Labradors could be prone to weight issues. On the other hand, Black Labradors are often seen as angels among their Labrador counterparts.

8. Border Collies – Energy and Enthusiasm

Border Collies are highly intelligent and energetic dogs that thrive on mental and physical stimulation. However, their energy levels can become problematic if not properly channeled. If you’re living in a city or don’t have time to engage in regular activities, a Border Collie might not fit your lifestyle best.

9. Bichon Frise – A Breath of Fresh Air

Amidst the ‘demon’ breeds, some bring a breath of fresh air. Bichon Frises are generally well-received, with minimal complaints from groomers. Their cheerful demeanor and manageable grooming requirements make them a delightful addition to many households.

10. Great Danes – The Dog Breed of Gentle Giants

Great Danes are known as ‘gentle giants’ for a reason. Despite their imposing size, they often have a sweet and gentle disposition. However, they can be quite timid and easily frightened by various stimuli. A Great Dane might be the perfect addition to your family if you have a calm and reassuring environment.

While every dog has its own personality, it’s important to know the potential challenges of certain breeds. Proper research, preparation, and a commitment to meeting a dog’s specific needs will ensure a harmonious relationship between you and your furry friends.
