Vigilant Grandma Spots Vehicle From Amber Alert In Minnesota And Saves A 1-Year-Old Boy

Can you imagine anything more frightening than having your car stolen WITH your child inside of it? We certainly cannot! For this little boy, however, things turned out okay in the end, and it was all thanks to a vigilant older lady who was paying attention!

A car was stolen from outside a church. According to reports, the SUV that was stolen is a white 2005 Grand Cherokee. The car had been left running outside of a church. The problem was, little one-year-old Da’merion Ni’mer White was inside the car.

His mother said she had placed the child in his car seat and quickly run back inside to get something. When she came back outside, she found her car was gone, along with her baby. The BCA issued an Amber Alert for Da’merion shortly after he and the car went missing.

An Amber Alert was put out for Da’merion, and luckily, it came across the right person’s phone, at the right time! According to the Star Tribune, that person was Barb Gusse, an avid bird watcher. She noticed an SUV in the street and, using her bird-watching binoculars, zoomed in to see the car. It turns out the SUV was the car she had just seen the amber alert for.

Barb is a grandmother and also a retired Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board employee. She recalls how she felt when she realized that the SUV was the same one that was missing.

We were just talking and the Amber Alert came on and buzzed on all our phones. My heart went to my feet. I was shaking so bad I couldn’t hold a cup. It was running, you could see the exhaust because it was so cold

Safe and Sound

Lucky for little Da’merion and his worried family, he was found safe about 2 hours later. In fact, the car had been left stranded with him still inside. The vehicle was spotted by none other than an older lady who had spotted the car.

According to the director of Information for Minneapolis Police, John Elder, someone called 911 to let them know they had spotted the car. He also thanked the Minnesota BCA for the Amber Alert which lead to the child’s safe and swift recovery.

“The caller had heard information from local media of the missing vehicle and child, The caller then received an AMBER Alert, which further prompted her to call 9-1-1. The AMBER Alert is a little bit of a delay, but the folks at the BCA are so receptive and responsive, we completely respect the need to go through one central system for this. The AMBER Alert is really the highest level of alert we have and the BCA does an incredible job administering that everything that goes out meets the criteria.”

The grandmother who very well may have saved the life of a child, says she hopes anyone would have called in if they had noticed what she did. “Honey, I’m no hero. I’m just a grandmother,” she said.
