Jim Carrey Calls Hollywood ‘Spineless’ For Giving Will Smith A Standing Ovation At The Oscars

The recent debacle at the Academy Awards has led to several celebrities raising their eyebrows. But, none of them have expressed their sentiments as clearly as Jim Carrey. In any case, Carrey himself may face several accusations, but he has never been shy to express their opinions. The legendary comedian has joined the upper echelons of Hollywood stardom, and his opinion does matter. So when he called the actions of the Academy ‘spineless’ with regards to Will Smith, people sat up and listened.

Jim Carrey Has Gone Full Grinch On Will Smith

In a recent interview, Jim Carrey made his opinion about the entire matter pretty clear. He stated that the standing ovation that Smith got later when he won the Best Actor award sickened him. He also lamented the fact that several deserving people had their time under the spotlight stolen. If only Will Smith hadn’t slapped Chris Rock before everyone.

“I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for 200 million dollars because that video is going to be there forever, it’s going to be ubiquitous. That insult is gonna last a very long time. If you want to yell from the audience and show disapproval or say something on Twitter, you do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack everybody in the face ‘cuz they said words.”

Nevertheless, Jim Carrey only has the best wishes for Will Smith, despite his despicable actions. While most of Hollywood has been pretty quiet about the whole situation, Carrey considered Will Smith’s actions as ‘selfish’.

“I wish him the best, I really do. I don’t have anything against Will Smith. He’s done great things. But that was not a good moment. It cast a pall over everybody’s shining moment. A lot of people worked really hard to get to that place. And to have their moment in the sun, to get their award for the really hard work they did, it is no mean feat to go through all the stuff you have to go through when you are nominated for an Oscar. It’s a gauntlet of devotion you have to do. It was such a selfish moment that cast a pall over the whole thing.”

The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air Ain’t Fresh No More

Millions were privy to the entire incident, and while some have claimed that this has been the most exciting Oscars for quite a few years, the morality has gone amok. Will Smith faced no retributions or consequences as he slapped Rock onstage for a GI Jane joke about Jada Smith. Although Rock’s joke was made in poor taste, Will Smith’s actions were over the top. Not only that- for Smith also screamed at Rock to “Keep my wife’s name out of your f—— mouth.”

Jim Carrey then referred to the audience’s reaction to Smith winning the Best Actor award for King Richard. “I was sickened by the standing ovation. I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like, oh, this is a really clear indication that we’re not the cool club anymore.”

Gayle King, the interviewer, then commented that if it were someone else, they would be escorted out. To this Carrey replied, “He should have been.”

Expulsion on the Cards For Will Smith?

Jim Carrey, contrary to public opinion, doesn’t feel that the incident had escalated to this extent.

According to the latest news, the Academy has finally launched an investigation into the entire matter. There have been talks that Will Smith could be expelled from the Awards. Irrespective of the steps taken, such an incident should never have taken place. As a respected actor, Will Smith should have had more control over his temper. And as Jim Carrey rightly states- he stole the thunder of more deserving filmmakers.
