In a recent development that has raised concerns among consumers, Kraft Heinz has issued a voluntary recall of approximately 83,800 cases of its individually wrapped Kraft Singles American cheese slices.1 The reason behind this recall is a potential choking hazard associated with these cheese slices. This move by Kraft Heinz underscores the company’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its customers

Understanding the Kraft Singles Recall

The voluntary recall was initiated by Kraft Heinz as a precautionary measure. It comes in response to a temporary issue that developed on one of the company’s wrapping machines, which led to a thin strip of the individual film remaining on the cheese slice even after the wrapper had been removed. In their statement, Kraft Heinz explained, “If the film sticks to the slice and is not removed, it could be unpleasant and potentially cause a gagging or choking hazard.” This potential choking hazard emerged as a result of a manufacturing error.2

One of the primary reasons for initiating the recall was receiving several complaints from customers who had found the plastic film sticking to a slice. Notably, six complaints indicated that these individuals had experienced choking or gagging concerning this issue.

However, it’s essential to emphasize that there have been no reported injuries or serious health issues related to this recall. This fact reassures consumers who may have purchased these products inadvertently.

Affected Kraft Products

The recall pertains to specific batches of Kraft Singles American cheese slices, and consumers are encouraged to check their purchased products for the following identifying information:

  • 16-ounce Kraft Singles American Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product with an individual package UPC of “0 2100061526 1” and a “Best When Used By” date ranging from 10 JAN 24 through 27 JAN 24.
  • 3-pound multipacks of the Kraft Singles American Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product with a carton UPC of “0 2100060491 3” and “Best When Used By” dates spanning from 09 JAN 2024 through 13 JAN 2024 and 16 JAN 2024.

These batches of cheese slices are the ones affected by the recall. Importantly, no other processed cheese slice varieties or sizes have been included in the recall, which helps consumers identify the specific products subject to this recall.

Prompt Action by Kraft Heinz

Kraft Heinz is committed to upholding its products’ highest safety and quality standards. In response to the manufacturing issue, the company has taken swift action to address the problem. They have not only recalled the affected batches but also fixed the machine responsible for the issue. Additionally, all other processing machines have been thoroughly inspected to ensure no other manufacturing problems could jeopardize product safety.

In a press release, Kraft Heinz expressed its commitment to customer safety and apologized for any inconvenience this recall may have caused. This proactive approach to product safety underscores the company’s dedication to ensuring the well-being of its customers.

What Consumers Should Do

For consumers who have purchased any of the recalled Kraft Singles cheese slices, it is of utmost importance not to consume these products. Instead, they are encouraged to return the product to the store where it was purchased. The store will typically offer an exchange or refund for the affected items.

In addition to returning the products to the store, Kraft Heinz has established a helpline that consumers can contact for more information or assistance. By calling 1-800-280-8252 during normal business hours, customers can receive guidance regarding whether they have a recalled product and find out more about the reimbursement process.

Choking Hazards in Food Products

Choking hazards in food products can manifest in various ways, and they are not limited to hard or sharp objects. The issue of the recalled Kraft Singles cheese primarily revolves around the thin strip of plastic film that can adhere to the cheese slice. While this plastic film may not necessarily cause physical harm, it does present a choking risk.

This type of choking hazard is not unique to food products. It is a known concern, especially in products designed for children. Often, plastic films used to protect items during shipping or packaging can become detached and pose a choking risk. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has warned about such hazards, particularly in children’s toys.3

It’s worth noting that choking hazards in food products have garnered attention recently. Traditionally, concerns have centered on foreign objects, especially those larger than 7 millimeters, that could cause injuries when ingested. However, in the case of the plastic film on the recalled Kraft Singles cheese, the primary concern is choking rather than physical injury.

In conclusion, Kraft Heinz’s voluntary recall of certain batches of Kraft Singles American cheese slices serves as a reminder of the company’s commitment to customer safety. While the recall was initiated due to a potential choking hazard stemming from a manufacturing issue, it is reassuring that no injuries or serious health problems have been reported.

Consumers who have purchased the affected products should heed the recall instructions and return them to the store for an exchange or refund. Additionally, Kraft Heinz has provided a helpline for customer inquiries and assistance.

Choking hazards in food products, as highlighted in this recall, can take various forms, and consumers need to remain vigilant. By promptly addressing safety concerns and taking proactive measures, companies like Kraft Heinz prioritize the well-being of their customers, fostering trust and confidence in their products.
