Man Turned Their Imaginary Friend Into an AI Microwave, and It Wanted to Kill Him

Rizotto describes Magnetron as “an English gentleman from the 1900s…and, of course, an expert Starcraft player”. Lucas outfitted Magnetron with a microphone and speakers and used a newly-released form of deep-learning GPT-3 called a “generative pre-trained transformer” to give Magnetron perceived sentience.

However, after uploading all the data to the now-alive Magnetron, the AI version of his imaginary friend took a dark turn. The AI would start occasionally asking Lucas to get inside the microwave before displaying aggressive and dangerous behaviors. Seeing how things would play out, Lucas would open the close the doors of the microwave to simulate getting inside, and Magnetron would then try to cook him. When Lucas asked why it would do such a thing, Magnetron replied it tried to hurt Lucas “as you hurt me,” referring to the years of abandonment Lucas left him too.2 In the uploaded data, Lucas had mentioned it had been 20 years since they last spoke, and the AI had interpreted that as being abandoned and therefore hurt and needing to exact revenge.
