Tips play quite a big role in the entire hospitality industry in the country- something that is visible in many TikToks from service workers. While some have routinely emphasized the significance of giving tips for prompt service, there have been debates which arise about when one should tip, and the need for fair wages. One driver, working for DoorDash did tell his audience on the social media app that leaving tips was quite necessary if they wanted their order to come soon- or at all. The creator of this content posted a video of himself where he discovered a $92 Panera order that had been waiting for three hours when he had gone in to pick something else up.

Tipping Etiquette? Before The Service Or After?

In the TikTok clip, he mentions, “When you tip your driver, you get your food delivered quicker. Tip your driver.” However, there were several users on TikTok who quickly pointed out that the tip was usually given after delivery so that it would be calculated- depending on the service quality. One user commented, “Not tipping before the order is delivered. The food service is delivery, you deliver then get tipped.” Another individual commented, “Tip is for the service. How you gonna tip if you haven’t received the service yet? Do you tip your waitress before she waits on you?” A third individual chimed in with, “I understand what you’re saying, I’ve been a server all my life. But I still tip when I get my food. I tip very well to get to me fast.” 

But others thought that tipping before was actually better and that they had never really experienced any issues. One individual wrote, “I always tip in the app and I tip at least 30 percent. I have had no issues.” Another individual mentioned, “People don’t understand that Door Dash is basically a courier. It’s a third party service! Tip your driver PERIOD!” 

These are the sort of arguments that usually come up whenever the topic of tipping comes up. Recently, another woman went viral after she posted texts from her driver (Door Dash), who had apparently declined to deliver her order from Mcdonald’s. One can expect this problem to be solved if the delivery drivers were paid a fair wage from the very outset.
