For most people, a “dream house” can mean a cottage on a hill, a sprawling mansion with landscaped gardens, or just a suburban house in a friendly neighborhood. But, that’s not the case for all of us, especially those who are particularly creative! For example, Will Breaux’s dream house is one made of shipping containers! This all took place in 2018.
Yes, you read it correctly – a house made of discarded shipping containers. Furthermore, Will did it entirely from the ground up. It is essentially a few containers stacked on top of each other.
The Original Plan For The Containers
Will had originally planned to build a townhouse having three stories keeping in line with the general aesthetics of his neighborhood. However, none of the projects that his designers came up with could satisfy him.
That’s why he started thinking about building a house made of shipping containers. He learned how to design on SketchUp just so he could come up with a design he liked. The design made use of 11 containers arranged from top to bottom to make the house three stories high. It even featured a rooftop deck.

But why did Will choose shipping containers as the material? Well, he says, these boxes are extremely structurally strong, durable, fireproof, and hurricane resistant. And, of course, it also has similar characteristics as other building materials. So there was no doubt in Will’s mind.
After finishing up with the initial design, Will took the help of a structural engineer to finalize the details. Then started the long and grueling process of getting the proper certifications. Will was inspired by a news story about the first container house in Houston.
It took him over 1 and a half years to see the semblance of a house. But, by the time, everything construction was finishing, Will owned an amazing container home spread across 2,500 sq. ft.

The Interior Matches The Most Luxurious Of Homes
From the outside, Will’s container home, to some, may not be that aesthetically pleasing. However, the house has every amenity that can be found in a usual home. And, in our opinion, it looks absolutely fabulous.
Will had faced further problems with connecting the water because of the house’s location. However, he eventually managed to get the work done, albeit for a hefty price.
However, for Will, the troubles were worth it. Just the bathroom and the kitchen are larger than the biggest rooms in most suburban homes!
What do you think of such projects? Will actually started working on another house made of containers. He calls it Container Home 2.0, and the work on it is close to being wrapped up as well. Check out his blog for more amazing pictures.
