Off-The-Grid Home Built Using 20-Foot Shipping Containers

If you’re a fan of tiny homes or have ever dreamed of living a slower-paced life surrounded by nature, then this off-the-grid home will certainly be cause for envy. This woman lives in a stunning home made of five 20-foot shipping containers in New Zealand. The off-the-grid home is absolutely stunning.

Off-The-Grid Home In New Zealand Made Of Shipping Containers

Rosie lives on 23-acres of land in a privately-owned reserve in Coromandel, New Zealand. Her home, however, is not your average cabin in the woods. She lives in a sustainable off-the-grid home made out of five 20-foot shipping containers. She named her house Ahurewa, which means “sacred place”.

Sacred is an understatement: Rosie lives surrounded by nature without another home in sight. She specifically positioned the house so that you have a perfect view of both sunrise and sunset every single day. You can’t get much more remote or tranquil than that.

Living Sustainably

Rosie’s goal when building her home was to live as sustainably as possible. She wanted to respect the nature she was so lucky to be surrounded by, not take away from it. The home achieves this by:

  • Using 12 solar panels in a 4kW system for electricity
  • A vermicomposting toilet
  • Two 2,500 L water tanks that direct water waste to the composting toilets for second use there.

She plants both edible and medicinal plants, as well as has a natural garden where she allows native plants to thrive. She does have backup batteries and a power inverter in case of less-sunny days. A beautiful little fireplace serves as a whole-home heater and a backup stove in case the main stove runs out of power.

It’s Gorgeous Inside And Out

There are floor-to-ceiling windows in nearly every room of the home to bring in plenty of natural light as well as to get the maximum benefit from the gorgeous views. The kitchen is spacious, she’s got a cozy library for reading, a simple but beautiful bathroom, and a bedroom large enough to fit a king-size bed. The best part about the bedroom, however, is the stunning views.

There is a gorgeous patio space constructed out front. Imagine sitting out there every morning with a cup of coffee or tea watching the sunrise. How could you be stressed? Finally, she’s got a beautiful backyard, garden space out back perfect for relaxing in. It has a heater so that you can enjoy the outdoor space even on the chillier nights.
