Previously a model for technology and innovation, the Tesla car company is seemingly losing popularity, and so is the company’s CEO and biggest shareholder, Elon Musk. He has been the subject of controversy numerous times, but now the company is facing another kind of backlash. Backlash from former dedicated employees.
Former Tesla Employee Goes Viral
Nico Murillo is a California resident and former Tesla employee. The former production supervisor shared his story on LinkedIn and it’s gone viral. Murillo explained that despite his long hours, dedication, and loyalty to Tesla, he was let go in April. According to Murillo, he slept in his car and ate microwave meals to keep up with and meet production goals. The post notes that more than 10% of employees have been let go, roughly 14,000 employees worldwide.
A Common Theme
On April 15th, Murillo logged in to his work portal to find that his account had been deactivated. Believing it was a technical error, he drove to work at the factory in Fremont, California. However, on the way, he received an alarming email. The email explained that due to “restructuring” his position had been eliminated. Still uncertain about his position he headed to the factory only to be turned away by security. Murillo sat in his car “in disbelief” he disclosed, adding that he’d been a loyal employee of Tesla since 2019. Sadly, Murillo isn’t the only former Tesla employee with a similar story. Diego Jett replied to Murillo’s post explaining his own experience.
I started as a production associate, and after putting in the work, learning different positions and skills in different departments across three different factories, sacrificing sleep and staying in my car in the parking lot, showering, heating up dinners in the microwave similar to you, I got a position as a HazWaste Tech,” he explained. “The same day, I started that position, I got the email my position had been terminated.”Meanwhile, another former Tesla employee shared that they moved their family and started over in a new place, just to be laid off.
Tesla Continues to Make Changes
Apparently, these new changes are a result of Tesla’s current sales. The company has faced a decrease in global sales and Musk explained the employees have been let go because of “duplication of roles and job functions in certain areas.” Musk wrote to Tesla employees: “We have . . . made the difficult decision to reduce our headcount by more than 10 percent globally . . . this will enable us to be lean, innovative, and hungry for the next growth phase cycle.” The U.S. isn’t the only country to see a significant drop in Tesla sales and employment. Germany and China have also been impacted with the latter seeing a decrease of more than 1%.
Jobs aren’t the only thing to disappear from Tesla either. The company has also recently lost its VP of Public Policy and the senior VP in engineering and technology. Additionally, the company has also issued cancel separation agreements after receiving the wrong severance packages.
