To promote his new book on climate change, Bill Gates recently hosted an ask me anything on Reddit. People had plenty of questions for him, but one of the top ones was why the tech billionaire bought more farmland than anyone else in America. (1)
His response began by stating that his investment firm decided and that it isn’t connected to climate change. After that, however, things got slightly more convoluted that. Why? Because he directly followed that statement up by talking about climate change. (1)
“The agriculture sector is important,” he said. “With more productive seeds we can avoid deforestation and help Africa deal with the climate difficulty they already face.” (1)
He continued by mentioning biofuels and their potential to solve automotive and aviation emissions. He mentions that it is not clear yet, but their potentially low cost could be the key. (1)

From what it sounds like, the decision by Gates’ investment firm was more financially driven than anything else.
